From New York Times bestsellers Preston and Child, archaeologist Nora Kelly and FBI Agent Corrie Swanson are tasked with the mysterious deaths of two people found at a site where a UFO allegedly crashed decades before. Lucas Tappan, a wealthy and eccentric billionaire and founder of Icarus Space Systems, approaches the Santa Fe Archaeological Institute with an outlandish proposal, to finance a careful, scientific excavation of the Roswell Incident site, where a UFO is alleged to have crashed in 1947. A skeptical Nora Kelly, to her great annoyance, is tasked with the job. Nora's excavation immediately uncovers two murder victims buried at the site, faces and hands obliterated with acid to erase their identities. Special Agent Corrie Swanson is assigned to the case. As Nora's excavation proceeds, uncovering things both bizarre and seemingly inexplicable, Corrie's homicide investigation throws open a Pandora's box of espionage and violence, uncovering bloody traces of a powerful force that will stop at nothing to protect its secrets, and that threatens to engulf them all in an unimaginable fate.

Diablo Mesa

Diablo Mesa – WARNING – There are a few spoilers below. So, if you plan to read the book, please do not let me ruin it for you. I used to be a huge Preston & Child fan, especially the Pendergast novels. Until they started getting crappy and hugely predictable. So, this novel – some good characters, Nora Kelly and Corrie Swanson. Even the story was pretty intriguing. Eventually it all goes to crap in my opinion. Nora quits her job because her bosses want her to dig up the Roswell Incident site to search for a UFO. Then of course she goes to work for Lucas Tappan the billionaire that wants the dig to happen. She insists on bringing her brother Skip (I can’t resist calling him Skippy) and their dog Matty to the dig. Soon after they start the excavation, they discover two bodies. This is where FBI Special Agent Corrie Swanson comes in. Then next thing you know Skippy’s boss at the dig entices him to go on a secret mission related to the dig. The boss disappears. Corrie’s boss mysteriously dies. Nora starts having a romantic relationship with her boss. Bet you didn’t see that stupid twist coming. Then a new mysterious FBI agent becomes Corrie’s boss. His name is Lime. There are a host of stupid people’s names in the book, security guard Shady for one. I was starting to think this book was for a twelve-year-old. When Sherriff Watts and Skippy go off to try to track where Bitan disappeared it’s a laugh. Watts knows everything practically within a very short time. Corrie goes to a dental practice to identify dental with an unusual filling – stainless steel. Boom, she finds what she’s looking for. Oh, come on, really? The book then switches from a mystery to sci-fi, not my favorite genre. UFO conspiracy. Events go from bad to worse to totally predictable. Thoroughly disappointed. Why do I keep buying these books when they are consistently bad?
