One of the Ten Best Books of The New York Times Book Review Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize Now a miniseries from Hulu starring James Franco ON NOVEMBER 22, 1963, THREE SHOTS RANG OUT IN DALLAS, PRESIDENT KENNEDY DIED, AND THE WORLD CHANGED. WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE IT BACK. In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King-who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer-takes readers on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it. It begins with Jake Epping, a thirty-five-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away-a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than fifty years ago when Harry Dunning's father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life-like Harry's, like America's in 1963-turning on a dime. Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret- his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession-to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

11/22/63 by Stephen King I wasn’t sure what to expect from this as I’m not much of a time travel fan, but I was blown away. This is so much more than some guy going back in time to stop the assassination of JFK. It has drama, suspense, (alternate)history and even a little romance (not the cheesy Hallmark kind either which I appreciate). What I really enjoyed was Jake Epping’s experiences the small town of Jodie and the people he met (Sadie, Mimi and Deke!) and relationships he formed. There’s a lot of heart in this that I didn’t expect as it is a King book and (in my mind) he’s solidly in the horror genre. Don’t get me wrong there is some violence, but it’s not over the top or scary. While the length (800+ pages) can seem intimidating, the plot moves quickly and kept my interest throughout. This has become my favorite Stephen King book to date and one of my top reads for this year by far. Highly recommend! **The audiobook was brilliantly narrated by Craig Wasson. I chose to listen tandem with reading and it really enhanced the story for me. Rating: 4.75/5 ⭐️

Very boring

I’m a huge Stephen King fan but this book was boring and it just drug on and on. It didn’t hold my interest at all and it didn’t want me wanting more or keep me up at night not wanting to put it down. A big “flop”.

Sci Fi or love story?

I am so beyond grateful that my planner book club leader chose this book!! As a kid and teen in the 80s and 90s, I popped Stephen King’s books like candy. IT jostled for my favorite standalone ever and Pet Semetary, The Shining, Carrie, Misery, Dolores Claiborne are all toward the top of my list. However, I haven’t read much of his Millenium stuff. Doctor Sleep and Joyland, to be exact. I just don’t find the same magic. However, during the recent hurricane, I read this by flashlight in 3 days. It was beyond fantastic!! Again, I was born in the late 70s, so the only thing I knew about the Kennedy assassination was from school and from the adults asking each other ”Where were you when..” However, this book made me FEEL the profound loss of what happened that day and made me emotional for that event. I also started looking up accounts of the events. My only dislike from the book is the romance. One thing I have appreciated about SK books is that they focus on the plot and tend to leave the mooshy stuff out. At the end of the book J wondered if I had just read a book about trying to change the past or a love story (Note: I know this won’t be a problem for most of you, I just don’t like romance in my books).. RANT AHEAD about the cover. This has nothing to do with SK or Jeff Miller, who designed the cover, but--WHY do powers that be have to mar GORGEOUS COVERS by branding screen adaptation notifications into them?! (see the pic for the Hulu brand)

Thrilling

Believe it or not, this was the first Stephen King novel I ever read & the size of this book was daunting to say the least. I couldn’t put it down! It has all the elements you’re looking for- time-travel, romance, action, thriller, history & a little bit dystopian. It felt really well-researched with just enough action to keep you turning the pages. Definitely a must read.
