How To Size A Suit. Suit sizing includes a number, your chest measurement, and a letter, the jacket length. For example, 42L or 38R. To find your chest measurement, hold a tape measure under your arms and around the fullest part of your chest. To find your jacket length, locate your height in the chart below and find the corresponding letter. Height 5 foot 4 inches to 5 foot 7 inches, suit length short S. Height 5 foot 7 and a half inches to 5 foot 11 inches, suit length regular R. Height 5 foot 11 and a half inches to 6 foot 2 and a half inches, suit length long L. Height 6 foot 3 inches and up, suit length X long XL. To determine your pant waist size, subtract 6 or 7 inches from your suit size number. 42L suits would be paired with 35 inch or 36 inch pants, for example. This 6 inch or 7 inch difference is known as a drop. If you're only purchasing pants, find your size by loosely holding a measuring tape around your natural waistline. Then measure your inseam by holding a tape measure straight from crotch seam to hem.
